  19.     This information is authorized for distribution only to 
  20. individuals who are members of the U.S. Military Affiliate Radio System, 
  21. Civil Air Patrol, or other government agency services specifically 
  22. permitted by the FCC to use non-Type-Accepted equipment such as that 
  23. utilized in the Amateur Radio Service.  Release of this information to 
  24. individuals not bearing a license in the MARS, CAP, or other such 
  25. government service is not authorized by Yaesu U.S.A.

  27.     *    Remove Antenna and Battery
  28.  
  29.     *    Remove (6) black screws in rear plastic cover plate
  30.         (where the battery would normally fit)
  31.  
  32.     *    Remove the (1) small black screw in the battery slide switch
  33.         (see figure 1 below for screw locations)
  34.  
  35.     *    Loosen (but don't remove) the (4) black screws on the upper
  36.         back of rear case and slightly separate the rear radio
  37.         case.
  38.  
  39.     *    Remove the "L" type plastic cover
  40.  
  41.         CAUTION: Watch out for the delicate ribbon cable
  42.  
  43.     *    Locate and unsolder jumper pad #6 (see Figure 2 below
  44.         for jumper locations) (Pads 1,7 should now be jumpered)
  45.         (Stock, Pads 1,6,7 only)
  46.  
  47.     *    Reinstall the "L" type plastic cover
  48.  
  49.     *    Tighten the (4) case screws on rear case
  50.  
  51.     *    Re-install the (6) black screws in rear plastic cover
  52.         plate.
  53.  
  54.     *    Re-install the (1) small black screw with the battery 
  55.         slide switch
  56.  
  57.     *    Now attach the antenna and battery
  58.  
  59.     *    Turn off Radio...  Press and hold both UP & Down Arrows
  60.         Keys (right side) while turning on the Radio
  61.  
  62.     *    Modification now complete!

  106. Kevin K. of Yaesu provided some great info about their new FT-51R HT, at the 
  107. recent meeting. He also described some undocumented features.  For 
  108. those who want a hardcopy of this, here it is.

  110. YAESU FT-51R Soft-Modifications - undocumented:  February 1995
  111.  
  112. The new FT-51R utilizes software to control the various deeper level
  113. functions instead of some traditional pots.
  114.  
  115. To access this undocumented menu:
  116.  
  117. 1.  Turn on radio, and select band you want to modify.
  118. 2.  Turn off the radio.
  119. 3.  Simultaneously press the 2 VOLUME keys and the CALL buttons while
  120.     powering on.
  121. 4.  You're now in the soft-mods menu.
  122. 5.  You'll now see the following menu choices while turning the DIAL
  123.     knob:
  124.  
  125.     BAND 1 (top of menu)
  126.     IF NO 0
  127.     S-FULL84
  128.     S-1 19
  129.     SQL TH64
  130.     SQL TI4E
  131.     MOD L 25
  132.     MOD H 27

  134. The only soft-mod I'm familiar with so far, is to change the deviation
  135. setting for the mike.

  137. Turn the dial until you see MOD L 25:
  138.     1.  Press the FUNCTION key down for 1/2 sec. until F flashes.
  139.     2.  Press the /\MHz or \/MHz to change the numerical value.
  140.     3.  Press the FUNCTION key again to save this change.
  141.     4.  Do the same for MOD H 27.
  142.     5.  Power off.
  143.  
  144. I'm not sure exactly what the numerical values mean, so experimenting
  145. is in order.
  146.  
  147. I'm also unclear as to what the other menu items are.  I believe they
  148. have to do with squelch settings, i.e., threshold.
  149.  
  150. I've also been told that the software can be controlled by an external
  151. computer, by accessing the handshake via simultaneously pressing 2 and
  152. 9, and powering on (remember MH-29, model # of the LCD mike).  I don't
  153. know what connector or software is needed.
